Rental Housing Code Ordinance On City Council Agenda Again

Original ordinance no 2039 will be introduced on first reading at the December 7th City Council Meeting.

“The purpose of the City Rental Housing Code is to provide minimum habitability criteria to safeguard health, property and public wellbeing of the owners, occupants and users of rental housing”

If passed, the ordinance would establish minimum standards for maintenance of rental property, a requirement for all rental units to be registered with the City of Laramie, a process for renters to make complaints if a rental unit is in violation of the minimum standards, and fines for property owners if violations are not corrected within the required timeframe.

Supporters of the ordinance look for the requirements to improve rental property conditions and hold landlords accountable for proper maintenance.

Opponents of the ordinance have raised concerns about the requirements and registration fees leading to higher rental rates as those costs will ultimately be passed on to renters.
