Shoveling Snow After A Storm.. Need Help?
As the snow begins to accumulate this winter, the City of Laramie reminds residents to give back to the community by becoming a Snow Angel. Intending to keep Laramie safe and shoveled during the snowy season, Laramie City Council developed the Snow Angels volunteer opportunity in conjunction with the City of Laramie’s new Volunteer Program to provide residents with new, easy ways to make an impact and help others.
The goal of the Snow Angels is to leave no snow un-shoveled and open the door for community members to help various City departments, like Code Enforcement, to make Laramie a better, safer place to live.
“City code requires homeowners to keep the sidewalks adjacent to their property clear of snow, ice, and other debris. This is extremely important for the safety of pedestrians, mail carriers, and emergency responders. Our hope is that Laramie residents can become Snow Angels to help their neighbors who may have a difficult time shoveling snow after a big storm,” says City of Laramie Management Analyst, Owen Schildt.
City Council listened to concerns and feedback from residents last winter who expressed snow removal challenges on their property after large snowfalls. Snow removal in residential neighborhoods is critical as snow accumulations on driveways and sidewalks create slick conditions which significantly increases the risk of falls and injuries for homeowners, visitors, and mail carriers. By clearing the snow, residents minimize the potential for accidents and maintain accessibility around their property during winter.
“We understand that people may be unable to shovel their own driveway or sidewalks due to age, disability, or physical impairment. In these cases, they will often ask a family member or neighbor to shovel for them, or in other cases, don’t clear the snow at all, which poses a risk for others. This is exactly where the Snow Angel volunteer opportunity comes in,” says Brannen Moan, Volunteer Program Administrator.
The Volunteer Program allows anyone to become a Snow Angel and help keep the community safe and clear of snow this winter. The platform is free to join and shares available municipal volunteer opportunities in Laramie.
