Laramie Takes Top Spot in Wyoming for LGBTQ+ Inclusion

Laramie, Wyoming, has been recognized as the state’s most inclusive community for LGBTQ+ individuals, according to the Human Rights Commission’s (HRC) Municipal Equality Index (MEI). This year, Laramie scored an impressive 89 out of 100 points, marking a significant improvement of 19 points from the previous year.

The MEI evaluates seven Wyoming cities for their LGBTQ+ inclusion and human rights practices, including Casper, Cheyenne, Gillette, Jackson, Laramie, Rock Springs, and Sheridan. It serves as the nation’s premier benchmarking tool for municipal officials, policymakers, and business leaders, providing insights into how cities can create more welcoming and equitable environments for all residents.

“The equality index gives us an opportunity each year to reflect on our progress and consider how we can make further strides to ensure Laramie is a welcoming community,” said City Manager Janine Jordan. “We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected.”

Laramie’s consistent high scores on the MEI reflect the city’s ongoing commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion. Over the past decade, Laramie has implemented various supportive policies and practices, including the establishment of a Safe Zone program, the adoption of a non-discrimination ordinance, and the creation of a LGBTQ+ resource center.

Looking ahead, the city plans to further enhance its LGBTQ+ inclusion efforts by evaluating the establishment of a municipal commission on human rights. This initiative would provide a formal platform for LGBTQ+ community members to engage with city officials and advocate for their needs.

“It is rewarding to see the efforts of the City of Laramie be reflected in this score,” said Mayor Brian Harrington. “We are committed to providing the highest quality of life possible for all our residents, and this includes ensuring that our LGBTQ+ community feels welcomed, supported, and valued.”

Laramie’s dedication to LGBTQ+ inclusion is a testament to the city’s commitment to creating a vibrant and inclusive community for all residents. By continuing to foster an environment of acceptance and understanding, Laramie can set a positive example for other municipalities across the country.
