Hikers Lost On A Trail, Located & Escorted To Trailhead.. Hikers Reminded Of Safety/Preparedness Tips

From Search And Rescue:

🚨 After Action Report – Medicine Bow Peak / Heart Lake 🚨

On the afternoon of September 28, 11 Albany County Search & Rescue volunteers responded alongside deputies from the Albany County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Centennial Valley Volunteer Fire department to assist two hikers who had lost the trail near Medicine Bow Peak. They were attempting to follow a trail listed on the popular app AllTrails, which incorrectly directed them off trail and into a rather dangerous boulder field. With storm clouds building and concerns about lightning, the subjects had wisely called 911 and sheltered in place until rescuers could reach them.

Our teams quickly located the pair, provided warming and rain protection, and escorted them safely back to the trailhead. Both were tired and cold, but otherwise unharmed.

This was ACSSAR’s 15th callout of the year.

Total volunteer man hours – 46.75

✅ Key Takeaway: This was a successful mission thanks to good decision-making by the subjects, rapid response by volunteers, and strong interagency coordination.

🗻 Preparedness Tips for the Mountains

Even familiar trails can turn dangerous when weather shifts suddenly. A few reminders for anyone recreating in the Snowy Range or other mountain areas:

Check the forecast before heading out—mountain storms can develop quickly.

Carry essential gear: extra layers, rain protection, food, water, and a headlamp.

Know your route and tell someone your plans. Be wary of trails listed on apps and websites. THE TRAIL HIGHLIGHTED IN THE ATTACHED IMAGE DOES NOT OFFICIALLY EXIST AND IS VERY ARDUOUS.

If severe weather hits, seek shelter, avoid exposed ridges, and wait it out.

We’re proud to serve our community and grateful for the support that allows us to train and respond when needed. Stay safe, stay prepared, and enjoy the mountains responsibly!
