Before You Build.. Do You Need A Permit

– Spring is upon us once again in the Gem City and with the warmer weather many Laramie residents will begin projects for the year, such as repairs to plumbing, heating, and electrical systems, renovations, or new construction. We as the city would like to remind everyone that any structure over 200 sq ft, fences over 7 ft in height, siding, roofing, decks, egress windows, any demolition and most construction – just to name some of the most common – require building permits.

Building permits typically require plan review, and that process should be expected to take three weeks. No work is permitted to be done until the permit is issued, so plan accordingly. If you are the homeowner, you can pull the permits to do the work yourself if it is your primary residence. If you own the house or property, but do not live there, you are required to hire a contractor that is licensed with the City of Laramie. When work is hired out, it must be a licensed contractor with the City of Laramie acquiring the permits and doing the work.

Please contact the Code Administration building department with any questions about projects and if the project you have planned this spring or summer will require a permit. Permits can be acquired through the City of Laramie, Code Administration Office located at 405 Grand Ave. You can reach the Code Administration Division by email at codeadmin@cityoflaramie.org  or by phone at (307) 721-5271 and if no one answers leave a message so we can get back to you.
