The City of Laramie is calling on residents to help put an end to the rising issue of street sign theft. Over the past few weeks, the city has experienced an uptick in the removal and theft of street signs, which poses significant public safety risks and costs taxpayers thousands of dollars in replacement fees.

Street signs ensure the safety of our community. They provide important information for drivers and pedestrians, helping to prevent accidents and guiding emergency responders to their destinations. Without proper signage, confusion can occur on the roadways, leading to dangerous driving conditions, delays in emergency response times, and potential harm to the public.

“Street signs are much more than markers; they are important pieces of our public infrastructure,” said Shane Johnson, Street and Fleet Maintenance Manager. “Removing these signs, whether for fun or profit, creates a hazard for everyone, and we urge residents to report any suspicious activity to police.”

Replacing stolen street signs takes time and impacts the city budget. Each sign costs the city upwards of $400 for materials and labor. When signs are stolen, it redirects funds from other important community services and infrastructure projects.

Street sign theft is a crime under Wyoming state law, and individuals caught stealing or vandalizing street signs face fines and potential jail time and could be held responsible for the cost of replacement.
