Laramie Announces Pilot Project for Sidewalk Improvement To Enhance Safety And ADA Compliance

The City of Laramie is pleased to announce a new initiative aimed at improving sidewalk safety and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the downtown area. In collaboration with specialized contractor Precision Concrete Cutting (PCC), the City will conduct concrete sidewalk cutting to reduce trip hazards and ensure downtown walkways meet ADA standards.

The project will focus on the area from University Avenue to Garfield Street, between 1st Street and 3rd Street. Concrete grinding will be implemented to adjust the sidewalk grades to meet ADA requirements. While some disruption to downtown businesses during the project is anticipated, PCC is experienced in working closely with business owners to minimize any inconvenience.

“We understand the importance of maintaining safe and accessible walkways for all members of our community,” said Shane Johnson, Public Works Street and Fleet Maintenance Manager. “This pilot project is a significant step toward addressing the concerns we’ve received about the condition of our sidewalks and ensuring a safer, more inclusive downtown area.”

This project, approved by the City Council as part of the FY25 budget adoption, is set to serve as a pilot program for future sidewalk improvements. PCC has recently completed an evaluation of the designated area and the Public Works department is coordinating with them to finalize the schedule, with work anticipated to begin the 5th of August and get completed by the 9th of August.
