WYDOT Announces Changes for Small Trailer Registrations

Starting July 1, 2023, owners of light trailers (defined as trailers weighing less than 1,000 lbs) now have the option to purchase a permanent plate for their trailer.

Light trailers that are less than 6 years old would cost $350 as a one-time payment for the permanent plate.

Older trailers can receive a permanent plate by paying a one-time $50 fee plus a one time fee equal to 5 times the county registration and a one-time fee equal to 5 times the state registration fee.

If a trailer with a permanent plate is sold, the plate expires and the seller must remove the plate. Permanent plates cannot transfer owners.

If an owner purchases a permanent plate for a trailer and then sells that trailer and purchases a new trailer within 60 days, the fees and plates can transfer to the new trailer.

The option to pay yearly to renew trailer registrations will still be available as well.
