Forest Service Partners with UW to Host Public Lands Day Volunteer Events

(LARAMIE, Wyo.)  September 20, 2022 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service has partnered with multiple groups, including the University of Wyoming (UW), to hold local volunteer events on National and Wyoming Public Lands Day, Saturday, Sept. 24.

Registration for events is available in advance online or day of the event.

Billed as the largest single-day volunteer effort for America’s public lands, the day highlights the importance of public lands nationally and in Wyoming, as well as acknowledging the multiple uses of public lands.

Volunteers are needed to assist with four events near Laramie on that day with varying levels of experience and labor. Two of the projects will be held on the Pole Mountain unit of the Medicine Bow National Forest, and two on the Pilot Hill Recreation Area.

  • Campground Improvements: General maintenance, such as painting picnic tables and signs, will take place at both Tie City and Yellow Pine Campgrounds on Pole Mountain.
  • Pilot Hill Fence Removal/Trail Maintenance: Sections of unnecessary old fence will be removed within the Pilot Hill Recreation Area and general trail maintenance will occur.

Volunteers are asked to meet between 8:30 – 9 a.m. in the UW Union. From that location, groups will head out to their respective work sites. This full-day event includes transportation if needed for UW-affiliated volunteers. Carpooling is encouraged for all others. Food, tools, and cloth work gloves (please bring work gloves if you have your own) will be provided. Partner representatives will help facilitate the workday. Volunteers should wear closed toe shoes, long sleeve shirts, pants, and bring water. Those interested in working in the campgrounds should wear clothing they don’t mind getting paint on.

Most project work should be completed by 2 p.m. Doughnuts and lunch will be provided for volunteers.

Those who wish to help with the Pilot Hill projects should anticipate a short hike to get to the work site and bring leather or thicker cotton gloves for handling barb wire.
