Mountain Shadows Equine Revival Celebrates 3 Years
Mountain Shadows Equine Revival is a small-scale, homegrown horse rescue that opened its doors in Laramie in 2019 when they brought home a skinny little yearling from a livestock auction. On her first vet visit, the seal bay mare, dubbed “Earhart” for the one and only pioneer, Amelia, was diagnosed with a serious heart murmur. Despite her save at auction, her future looked uncertain. However, after spending time to fatten up and grow up, Earhart’s veterinary evaluation a year later looked much more promising, so she was put into the training program and started under saddle at a Buck Brannaman colt-starting clinic. Her sweet temperament and willingness to try made her a barn favorite, and she was soon adopted to a fantastic home, where she spends her days stretching her legs on a large ranch in Northern Colorado.
Since that day three years ago, Mountain Shadows has taken in thirty-three horses from livestock auctions, law-enforcement cases, and surrenders from owners no longer able to care for their horses. Mountain Shadows may be small in scale, typically housing between eleven and fourteen horses at a time, but their impact is large. Horses have come in from Colorado to Oregon and adopters have come from as far as Arkansas and Arizona for Mountain Shadows’ horses.
At Mountain Shadows, they are daily living up to their mission to “change the face of the rescue horse.” Wyoming’s most active horse rescue is unlike any other in their commitment to training each horse that comes through the barn doors. Their conviction is that, with solid training, they can break the cycle of abuse and neglect, turning unwanted horses into steadfast companions.
Mountain Shadows’ most recent success story includes a 15-year-old feral broodmare who lashed out at volunteers with teeth and hooves for six months before finally allowing human contact. Once haltered, however, Valkyrie was a quick learner, and is now a dynamo under saddle who is projected to be available for adoption next month.
